Auto detailing is an in-depth and thorough process of cleaning that covers every part of a vehicle and requires attention to detail. This includes the paint, interior, engine bay, headlights, glass, wheels, and tires. Each one gets its own approach, products, and process.
A lot of car owners try detailing on their own since they feel they know their vehicle the best. But once you see what a professional detail actually does, that mindset changes. Below, we’ll go through the benefits of car detailing, the steps involved, and why it’s worth leaving it to a professional.

Why Auto Detailing Matters in Calgary
Calgary’s weather and road conditions are tough on vehicles. Road salt in the winter etches into the paint and leaves stains in the carpets inside your car. UV rays in the summer fade the paint and dry out the dashboard and seats. Bird droppings, tree sap, and dust also land on your vehicle constantly.
The damage compounds, and at times it gets to a point where the only fix is a repair or a repaint.
Professional detailing protects your car from all of that.
The Benefits of Auto Detailing
Your Exterior Looks New and Stays Protected
Your vehicle is washed and decontaminated, then a wax or sealant is applied at the end of the detail. That gives it a clean shine and creates a barrier between your paint and everything coming at it. Without it, the paint takes the damage directly, and over time you start to see oxidation, fading, and dullness.
The Interior Gets a Full Deep Clean
Full interior detailing cleans every surface, including the seats, carpets, dashboard, vents, and cup holders. Stains and odors are also removed, and the plastics, vinyl, and leather are conditioned, so the interior looks, feels, and stays clean.

Increases Your Resale Value
Buyers are attracted to a well-maintained car with a clean exterior and interior. It’s part of what gives them confidence in the purchase.
If you’re selling your vehicle, it’s best to get it detailed before it’s listed. Just getting it cleaned up can increase its resale value. We’ve been able to take a lot of our customers’ vehicles from looking rough to being ready to sell.
The Spots Others Miss Get Cleaned
Car detailing is extensive and gets into the spots that are easily missed, such as between the cushions, under the seats, the door jambs, and the trunk. Getting those spots clean is part of what makes a car feel fully clean.
The engine bay is another commonly missed area. Dirt and dust settle under the hood, and an engine detail removes the grime, grease, and debris.
Visibility and Safety
Foggy or yellowed headlights are something we see often, and they reduce visibility at night. A headlight restoration removes the oxidation and fog buildup, making the headlights clear again.
The windshield and mirrors are also cleaned inside and out until they’re streak-free. Clean glass gives you clear visibility and keeps you safe, especially when winter driving conditions get bad.

What the Car Detailing Process Looks Like
Detailing breaks down into three steps: cleaning, enhancing, and protecting. Every detail covers some level of all three.
Cleaning
Exterior:
- Wheels and tires: The wheels and tires are washed first.
- Hand wash: The exterior is foamed down and hand washed using the two-bucket wash method, agitating from top to bottom, panel by panel, then thoroughly rinsing.
- Decontamination: The paint is decontaminated to pull off contaminants such as tree sap, iron deposits, and water spots that the hand wash didn’t remove, then the vehicle is dried.
Interior:
- Floor mats: Floor mats are removed, vacuumed, and cleaned before starting the rest of the interior.
- Vacuum: The whole interior is thoroughly vacuumed, including the seats, carpet, and trunk.
- Wipe-down: The dashboard, panels, vents, buttons, and any plastics or vinyl are wiped down.
- Shampoo and extraction: All upholstery or fabric areas of the interior are shampooed and hot water extracted to pull out any stains or odors.
- Leather: All leather areas are brushed and steamed.
- Glass: The glass is cleaned inside and out until streak-free.
- Final pass: A final vacuum to catch anything loosened during shampooing, a last check for missed spots, and putting the floor mats back into the vehicle.
Enhancement
Once everything’s clean, enhancement brings back the look of the paint, headlights, and trim.
A one-step polish cleans up minor swirls and gives the paint depth. Faded trim is restored, and the oxidation is removed from the headlights.
If the paint has heavier damage, like deeper scratches, it needs a more extensive correction, such as a two-step paint correction, or wet sanding for the worst defects.

Protection
The last step seals in all that work, so the car doesn’t get dirty or damaged as easily.
A wax or sealant is applied to the paint. A wax lasts about 4 to 8 weeks, and a sealant lasts 3 to 6 months.
The tires are also dressed to protect the rubber and give a clean finish. Inside, the vinyl and leather are dressed and conditioned at the end of the interior detail to protect them from UV fading and cracking.
For longer-lasting protection, a ceramic coating can last anywhere from 2 to 5 years. Other upgrades include paint protection film against rock chips and scratches, window tint for UV, heat, and privacy, and coatings for the wheels, fabric, and leather.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a car detail take?
A basic detail takes about 1 to 3 hours. Full details can take about 3 to 8 hours, and premium services can take most of a day or longer, depending on the size and condition of the car.
How much does an auto detail cost in Calgary?
A basic detail starts around $100. Full interior and exterior details cost about $250 to $500. Higher-end details, paint correction, or coatings are in the $400 to $2,000+ range. Pricing depends on the size and condition of your car, and what services it requires.
Is professional car detailing worth it?
Yes. Professional detailers use the right products and have the equipment for the job. It also saves you time, and you don’t need to buy the tools and products yourself.
How often should I get my car detailed?
For daily drivers, detailing every 2 to 4 months keeps your car well-maintained throughout the year. In Calgary, with how hard the weather is on your vehicle, we recommend getting it detailed as often as every 2 months.
What’s the difference between a car wash and a detail?
A car wash gets surface dirt off, and that’s it. Detailing includes paint decontamination, shampooing and extracting the interior, protecting the paint, plastics, and leather, and more. The two shouldn’t even be compared.
Can detailing remove scratches from my car?
Yes. That’s what paint correction is for. A machine polisher levels out the clear coat and removes scratches and swirl marks. Scratches that go through the clear coat into the paint need touch-up paint instead, or a repaint of that panel in severe cases.
